Inspiring View

Winter Morning Window

When I look up from the design rendering I am working on, this is my view.

When I look up from the design rendering I’m working on, this is my view.

When I’m not out consulting at a clients home or office, I work from home.  I have a large studio which houses all of my samples (thousands of them), cutting table and various machines.  It’s very utilitarian for maximum productivity.

Portable technology allows me to easily move around from room to room when I am designing on the computer.  Depending on the season and my mood I pick a place to work where I’ll be inspired.

I’m in need of warmth and lots of comfort today.  The dining room is my office du jour.  There’s no better place to inspire designs than looking up to see a beautiful arched top custom window treatment.  The custom upholstered chair is a cozy place to talk on the phone and enjoy the daylight.  Looking through the window, I dream of warmer temperatures so I can go work in the gazebo.  Nature always inspires me as these delicate flowers are a reminder of my mom, sweet Violette.

I realize it’s not just rooms I’m designing for my clients. I am designing spaces to comfort, warm and nurture them.  With all of this beauty surrounding me, I may glance up a little more often to think and reflect. Work will get done, perhaps a little slower…

Sunday Thoughts – Finding Design Inspiration While At The Beach On Cape Cod

A designer’s mind is ALWAYS designing

I am passionate about window treatments, as if you didn’t already know that.  I love this business so much, even after 30 years, that I manage to find inspiration for my unique designs in the most unusual places.

Most of the time the weekend does not mean I leave my projects behind.  My mind is constantly going through the Rolodex of current, perspective and past custom window treatment projects.

Designing window treatments brings me lots of JOY

We’ve escaped to Cape Cod for one last weekend before our daughter heads back to college.  As many of you know it has been a very eventful summer for our family.  Our son moved into his first house and our daughter had major surgery.  She is feeling far better than any of us imagined.  Check out Amy’s Back.

Taking time to do nothing often brings everything into perspective.

Sitting at the beach is total relaxation for me.  My mind is free to wander.  It is in this nothingness that everything I look at inspires a design for a window treatment. Designing is more like child’s-play than work.

Hard sand at low tide makes a great drawing board

The tiniest of pure white seashells stand out among the grains of sand.

A sprig, if that’s what it’s called, of seaweed dances and sways with the incoming waves.

Adding in the motifs of the fabric to the window treatment sketch in the sand.

Boat/dock lines inspired the decorative trim along a valance.

Materials

Ocean blue and sandy beige beach themed fabrics will be used to create a beach themed window treatment.

See the design in the studio for this project.

Check back in a few days to see the completed design in my Cape Cod clients beach house.

I’m heading back to dip my toes in Cape Cod Bay

Happy Weekend!

XOXO

My Little Girl Dreams Came True

The dreams of a 7 years old

Growing up the baby sister to two brothers left me lots of time for imaginative girl play.  Two things I recall doing was playing house (I made floor plans by raking pine needles into blue print style rooms) and playing with baby dolls.

I was about seven when I declared that I would one day have a doll named Amy.  As my family can attest, I am very determined to make my dreams into a reality.

Amy 2 weeks old

She was my real live doll at two weeks old. Her dark brown eyes and the pink bow in her hair were a small glimmer of her future.

Bows, dresses and a room to decorate

I had so much fun making dresses for my baby and tying bows in her hair.  Of course I also had the opportunity to design a dream room for our very own princess.

Amy's room when she was three.

Decorating for my very own doll was so much fun.

This is what her room looked like when she was three years old.  All of the ruffles, bows and pink were a reflection of her personality.  The animal silhouette clouds on the ceiling were left over from her nursery.  The full size princess bed with crowne and upholstered headboard gave her plenty of room to grow up in.
